Over 600 volunteers currently help out in the hospice, our 11 charity shops, the community fundraising supporter groups and at various events during the year.

Volunteers play an integral part in the life of St Raphael’s. Without them we would be unable to offer the high level of service to patients that we currently do.

Our volunteers help through three broad groups:

Hospice support

Within the hospice volunteers assist in a variety of roles including transport, reception, day care, ward duties, fundraising and administration, bereavement support.

Charity Shops

All our charity shops rely on volunteers. There are nine shops, plus a retail warehouse. Each shop has a paid full time manager, plus a paid part time Assistant Manager. But each shop relies on volunteers to main the till, help sort the donated goods, get customers to sign up to “gift aid” and generally helping in the shop. Most volunteers help for a specific day or afternoon per week.

Fundraising

Both by individuals, and via local Supporter Groups. Individuals can help by raising funds in almost any number of ways. You could visit the other pages in this section of the website for some ideas. But we also have 9 local Supporter Groups, based in local geographical areas which are informal groups who raise awareness of the work of the hospice in their area, and raise funds through organising events, and encourage others to do likewise.

To help with general fundraising, please contact Louisa Hitchen on 020 8844 3857
or see our Community Fundraising page.

All volunteers who help within the hospice must be over 18 and are required to have a CRB check, and it is for that reason that we cannot accept volunteers on a temporary basis. We also do not recommend that anyone who has themselves been bereaved within the past two years should consider become a hospice volunteer – maybe in the future of course, and Gill Nunn will be pleased to discuss that with anyone. There are no similar restrictions, other than usually minimum age 18, regarding Charity Shops or other fundraising.

Our 400+ volunteers give over 60,000 hours of their time last year. If that time had been paid for it would cost the hospice at least £500,000 a year. The charity wishes to thank all the volunteers and express our appreciation for the enthusiasm and dedication that they bring to the work of St Raphael’s Hospice.

The Volunteer Services Manager at St Raphael’s Hospice is Mrs Gill Nunn. She can be contacted at the hospice on 020 8335 4575 or via email: enquiries@straphaels.org.uk
